Blue baby syndrome

The Blue Baby Syndrome or simply put in, the blue baby is a term used mostly by laymen to describe the new born babies with the disease termed cyanotic heart lesions.  This is caused by the decreased ablityt of blood to carry oxygen along with it to body cells and tissue. This results in the deficiency of oxygen in various parts of the babies’ body.

A baby with blue baby syndrome is also known as a cyanotic newborn.  The  blue baby syndrome may be Persistent Truncus Arteriosus, Transposition of the great vessels, Tricuspid atresia, Tetralogy of Fallot, or Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return. The blue baby syndrome can also be produced due to respiratory distress syndrome, another of insults in neonates or newly born babies. However, these are not structural lesions and thus many doctors do not consider this as true “cyanotic lesions”.  The respiratory distress syndrome can also be caused by Methemoglobinemia. This is mainly because of the high nitrate contamination in ground water which results in decreased oxygen Blue baby syndromecarrying capacity of hemoglobin in babies. This ultimately leads to the death of the new born. The leaching of nitrate generated from fertilizers used for agricultural purposes is one of the main reasons why ground water gets contaminated.

The blue baby syndrome may also be caused due to the pesticides used in agricultural purposes. The pesticides used can cause ecotoxicological problems in the food, resulting in the increased BOD which leads to the death of aquatic animals. It has been assessed that an approximate of one baby in a thousand babies are born with the blue baby syndrome.  The blue baby syndrome usually occurs in babies who are mostly six months or even younger than that; however older children and adults are also not free from this disease. The skin of a baby with blue baby syndrome has a bluish tint, making it harder to detect in babies with darker skin tones.  Sometimes this symptom also resembles other disease such as diarrhea or vomiting and shortness of breath.

If these symptoms develop in your baby, then it is better to see k medical attention. The doctor can then administer a medicine called methylene blue which can help the baby to return to normal and recover from the blue baby syndrome.
